High-control groups — how to recognize them

This guide is based on the BITE model by Dr. Steven Hassan (Freedom of Mind, ICSA). It does NOT name any specific religion, sect, MLM, financial guru or coach. It gives you a checklist so you — or someone you love — can evaluate any group on your own.

Not every group with strict rules is harmful. Many traditions ask for discipline. The red flag is the combination — multiple BITE items at once, especially when leaving costs you family, money or identity.

    Behavior Control

    • Strict dress code, diet, sleep rules — framed as 'spiritual purity'
    • Major life decisions (marriage, work, where to live) require leader's approval
    • Time is heavily structured: chanting, services, fundraising — little 'free' time
    • Financial contribution expected (lifetime membership fees, 'dakshina', tithe)
    • Punishment / shaming for breaking minor rules

    Information Control

    • Outside sources (news, critics, ex-members) labeled as 'maya', 'demonic', 'envious'
    • Only group-approved books, lectures, websites are 'safe'
    • Internal scandals are hidden or reframed as 'tests of faith'
    • Members are discouraged from researching the group's history independently
    • Confessions / personal data used later for emotional leverage

    Thought Control

    • Loaded language: outsiders = 'karmis', doubts = 'illusion', leaving = 'falling down'
    • Critical thinking framed as 'ego', 'pride', 'lack of surrender'
    • Black-and-white thinking: we are pure, the world is impure
    • Thought-stopping techniques: chanting, prayer loops when doubt arises
    • Founder/guru claimed as infallible, even after documented abuse
    E

    Emotional Control

    • Fear of leaving: 'you will go to hell / lose all spiritual progress'
    • Love-bombing on entry, cold shoulder when you question
    • Family members outside the group framed as 'spiritually dangerous'
    • Guilt / shame used as primary motivator
    • Ex-members publicly labeled 'fallen', 'envious', 'attacked by demons'

What you can do — gently

    Stay in contact

Don't ultimatum. Don't argue doctrine. Just keep the door open — birthdays, calls, normal life.

    Ask, don't tell

Open questions ('how do you feel about…') land softer than 'they are a cult'.

    Document for yourself

Quietly note dates, donations, claims. Useful later if legal or medical questions arise.

    Get your own support

Loving someone in a high-control group is exhausting. Therapist, peer group, journal — not optional.
